Matwerkz Pyrowerkz
A lightweight, flexible fire-protection insulation sheet designed to prevent battery fire propagation — encapsulating individual cells to contain heat during thermal runaway.
What it is
Matwerkz Pyrowerkz is a lightweight fire-resistant jacket that stops the propagation of fire and heat during a thermal runaway. Exposure to high temperatures rapidly transforms Pyrowerkz into a rigid thermal barrier with exceptionally low thermal conductivity, protecting valuable assets. It is designed for integration within EV prismatic battery modules and packs, supplied in sheet form, and can be die-cut and customised with integrated seams to support folding and simplified installation across cell formats.
Structural design
Pyrowerkz uses a sandwich construction: a central insulation layer bonded between two impact-resistant structural films. The black outer film provides mechanical integrity during a thermal-runaway event, withstanding forces from a trigger cell; a white section is positioned above the cell safety valve to allow controlled venting of gases and pressure. When protecting adjacent cells, it shields them from direct flame and excessive heat while integrating waterproofing, flame resistance, and thermal and electrical insulation in a single solution.

Third-party tested (UL2596) & in the field
In the UL2596 EV Battery Enclosure Material Safety Test (Project No. 4791261656), a battery pack with a plain plastic lid saw the lid blow off with catastrophic fire spread, while a pack with a Pyrowerkz-adhered lid contained the fire and maintained structural integrity under impact and pressure. In backside-temperature testing, Pyrowerkz held a lower, more stable temperature than aerogel, mica sheet and composite fabric over a 30-minute exposure. Pyrowerkz is already used as a fire-protection sheet in power-assisted (two-wheeler) battery packs.
