Thermal Management Compounds

Matwerkz Thermorphous Type R

A thermally conductive potting compound developed to dissipate heat from batteries in normal use — then transform into an excellent thermal insulator above 120 °C to protect adjacent cells during a thermal runaway.

What it is

Thermorphous Type R is a thermally conductive potting compound developed to dissipate heat from batteries within their working temperature range (20-70 °C). Should the battery overheat above 120 °C, Type R transforms into an excellent thermal insulation to prevent high temperature from affecting adjacent cells in the module, and can withstand up to 1000 °C should the incident escalate into a thermal runaway. Low viscosity lets it flow into crevices and tight cavities to fully embed electronic circuits and battery assemblies; it is also available in sheet form that can be die-cut or molded — including as thermal-runaway barriers and fire-resistant seals in door panels.

Key features

Dual-mode

Thermally conductive (> 1 W/m·K) below 80 °C; transforms into thermal insulation from 120 °C.

Withstands 1000 °C

Non-flammable; protects adjacent cells in a thermal runaway.

Volume-expandable grades

Expand by up to 100 vol% to seal gaps and insulate heat in a fire.

Waterproofing & impact

Provides waterproofing plus impact resistance and shock dampening.

Electrically insulative

Pottable directly onto electronic circuits and battery cells.

Tunable hardness

Hardness and compressibility variable between 40 and 80 Shore A.

Available grades

Potting grade

Flows and fills gaps

Cures at room temperature; high electrical resistivity to encapsulate circuits and cells; water and dust protection.

Sheet grade

Flexible, compressible sheet

Can be laminated with other materials for better mechanical performance; optional double-sided tape; excellent fire-penetration resistance.
